What causes hair breakage
Hair that snaps somewhere along its length is failing structurally — it has not fallen out, it has given way. That distinction decides everything: whether the answer is a change of handling, a cut, a course of repair, or a doctor. This guide works through the causes, then how the two are told apart at the chair.
What breakage really means
A hair fibre is a rope: an inner cortex of protein bundles doing the load-bearing, wrapped in a protective outer layer.
Breakage is that rope failing partway along its length. Enough of the cortex has been lost, or enough tension applied, that the fibre parts before it reaches the end it should have reached. What you see is short pieces of hair everywhere, ends that seem to arrive at several different lengths at once, a ponytail that has thinned at the band while the hairline sprouts a halo of short strands, and length that has not increased in a year despite the hair still growing.
Shedding is a different event. A hair released at the end of its growth cycle comes away whole, with a small pale bulb at the root end, and losing fifty to a hundred of those a day is ordinary. A broken hair has no bulb: both ends are just hair. That single check — look at the ends of what came out — separates the two problems faster than any conversation, and it decides who should be looking at it.
Breakage also has a direction of travel. Fragile hair breaks, the broken ends fray, the frayed ends break higher, and the process accelerates while the hair keeps being handled the way that started it. Almost all of it is preventable, and almost none of it is repairable — the fibre that broke is gone, and the plan is to protect what remains while it grows.

How professionals diagnose breakage
The purpose of the diagnosis is to place the problem: at the root, along the shaft, or in the way the hair is handled between appointments.
The hair that has come away is looked at first, for a bulb. Then elasticity is tested on a wet strand and compared at three heights, because breakage that is confined to the mid-lengths reads differently from breakage that starts at the crown. Hair that stretches unusually far and stays stretched is over-conditioned and under-supported; hair that will not stretch at all and parts with a dry snap has too much protein or too much damage. Those two findings lead to opposite instructions, which is why nobody should be guessing between them.
Where the short pieces sit is the next question, and it is often the whole answer. A band of short hairs around the hairline points at tension. Short pieces concentrated where a ponytail sits point at the elastic. Breakage spread evenly through the mid-lengths after a busy few months points at a chemical and heat load. Breakage above a line of coloured length points at where the bleach stopped.
The scalp is examined, and this is where the referral happens. Widening partings, patchy loss, soreness, sudden shedding after illness, childbirth, a medication change or a period of stress are not salon problems, and no treatment sold here would be honest. Those go to a doctor, and we say so at the chair — the treatment can wait until the cause has been named.

Cause one · Tension
Pulling, held for hours at a time
The most common cause we see and the one guests are least likely to suspect, because nothing about it hurts on the day.

Tight styles worn in the same place every day
A high ponytail, a tight bun or a braid pulled firm loads the same fibres at the same point for eight or ten hours. Repeated daily, the hair at that point fatigues and parts, which is why the short pieces sit exactly where the band sat. Varying the height, loosening by a finger's width, and letting it down at home costs nothing and stops the mechanism.

The hairline, where tension shows first
Fine baby hairs at the temples and the front carry the least load and go first, producing a fringe of short broken strands that gets styled over rather than investigated. Persistent pulling at the hairline can eventually affect the follicle itself rather than only the shaft, and at that point it is a medical matter — which is a good reason to take an early halo of short hairs seriously.

Thin elastics, metal clasps and pins
A thin band concentrates all the tension into a narrow line, and a metal join or a rough pin cuts as well as pulls. Fabric-covered ties, spiral coils and smooth clips spread the load. Sleeping in a tight tie combines tension with a night of friction, which is the worst available combination.

Weight applied to hair that cannot carry it
Extensions, heavy attached styling and anything clipped in for a long day put a continuous downward load on the anchoring hair. Fitted onto strong hair and removed properly, that is manageable; fitted onto fine or already-breaking hair, it accelerates exactly what it was hiding.
The limit of this cause: removing tension stops further breakage, but the pieces already broken stay short until they grow. Expect months, not weeks, before the outline looks even again.
Cause two · Handling
Wet hair, and what is done to it
Hair is at its most vulnerable when it is soaking, and most people do their roughest handling in exactly that window.

Brushing wet, from the roots down
Water swells the fibre and reduces its resistance to stretching, so a brush dragged from the scalp through a tangle pulls the whole length against a knot and snaps it above the knot. Detangling starts at the ends and works upward in sections, with a wide-tooth comb, on damp rather than dripping hair.

Turban-wrapping and rubbing dry
A towel twisted tight on top of the head loads the hairline while the fibres are swollen, and rubbing lifts and tears the outer layer. Blotting and squeezing does the same drying job without either effect, and takes about the same time.

Tying it up while it is still wet
Wet hair stretched into a band dries in that stretched position and is loaded for hours at its weakest. Where hair has to go up after a wash, it goes up loose and comes down as soon as it is dry.

Friction, night after night
Hundreds of hours turning against cotton roughen the outer layer and start the fraying that becomes breakage. A loose plait, and a silk or satin pillowcase, remove the friction without requiring anything else to change.
The limit of this cause: gentler handling prevents the next breakage. It does not strengthen a fibre that has already lost cortex.
Cause three · Protein and moisture
The balance that decides how a fibre behaves
Hair needs both structure and flexibility. Too much of either produces breakage, and the two failures feel entirely different in the hand.

Too much protein: stiff, rough, snapping dry
Protein products used weekly on hair that did not need them build rigidity, and rigid fibres do not bend — they break. The signs are hair that feels straw-like and dull, refuses to stretch, and snaps with a dry sound. The correction is to stop the protein and rebuild moisture, and it takes a few weeks.

Too much moisture: soft, limp, stretching and staying stretched
Heavy conditioning with no structural support leaves fibres that feel mushy when wet, stretch far and do not return, and break under their own weight. It is common in people doing everything right for dryness and nothing for strength. The correction is a measured amount of protein, not more mask.

Swelling and drying, over and over
Every wash swells the fibre and every dry shrinks it, and porous hair swells further and faster. Very frequent washing of already-porous hair fatigues it through that cycle alone, which is one reason wash frequency comes up in a conversation that started about strength.
The limit of this cause: balance is restored by changing what is applied, and it takes weeks to read the result. Judging it after two washes leads to over-correction in the other direction.

Chemistry and heat, stacked without recovery

Services stacked closer than the hair can absorb
Lightening, a smoothing system and a colour refresh inside one season each remove a little structure. The hair that breaks in month four is paying for all three, not for the last one, and the appointment book usually tells the story faster than the strand does.

Daily heat on top of chemical work
Chemically processed hair tolerates less temperature than virgin hair, and the two together are the most reliable route to mid-length breakage we see. Where both are present, the heat is the easier of the two to reduce immediately.

Splits left in place, travelling upward
A split end is a fibre that has already begun to fail, and the split does not stay where it started. Left uncut, it works up the shaft until the hair breaks well above the damage — which is why a trim is a breakage measure and not a cosmetic one.
The limit of this cause: accumulated damage does not reverse. The plan is to stop adding to it and remove what has already failed.

What actually helps, and what makes breakage worse
Read this as a description of what each option does to a fragile fibre. Which applies to your hair is decided from the diagnosis, and for this problem the honest answer is very often not a treatment.

When a cut is the first move
Where the last inches are frayed, split or breaking, removing them stops the upward travel and gives the remaining length a chance. It is the least popular recommendation in this subject because it costs length, and it is frequently the one that changes the outcome. Everything else works better on hair that has had the failing part taken off.

When a structural course addresses the cause
Where elasticity testing shows lost structure, a course of bond-building or protein work — sittings spaced over weeks, matched to what the test showed — supports the fibre while the routine changes hold. It is corrective rather than cosmetic, nothing about it is visible in one sitting, and applied to hair that was over-proteined already it makes matters worse. That is precisely why it follows the test.

When smoothing treatments are the wrong answer
Repair-led and sealing treatments both add weight and coating to the shaft, and weight is what fragile hair least needs. On hair that is breaking rather than dry, a hair botox or keratin service is generally declined here until strength has been rebuilt and the ends have been cut — and where a guest arrives asking for one, that is the conversation rather than the booking. Once the hair is sound, either may become appropriate for the reason it exists.

When it belongs with a doctor
Sudden shedding, widening partings, patchy loss, an itching or sore scalp, or hair coming away with the bulb attached in quantity — none of these is breakage, and none of them is treated in a salon. They are referred, and the referral is not a way of avoiding the work: hair with a medical cause does not respond to anything applied to it.
No treatment repairs a broken fibre. Everything here either prevents the next break, supports what is still intact, or removes what has already failed.
What people do when hair starts breaking
Every one of these is a reasonable reaction to seeing short hairs in the brush. Several of them speed the process up.

Section, start at the ends, use a wide-tooth comb on damp hair. Force applied to a knot breaks the hair above it every time.

Booking a smoothing treatment to make broken hair behave.
Instead
Rebuild strength and cut the failed ends first. Weight on fragile hair is the wrong direction, whatever it is sold as.

Assuming it is hair fall and buying an anti-hair-fall range.

Look for the bulb. Products aimed at the follicle do nothing for a fibre that is snapping halfway along.

Changing shampoo, conditioner, oil and technique in the same week.

Change one thing and give it three or four weeks. Breakage takes months to develop and cannot be read in days.

How do I tell breakage from hair falling out?
Look at the root end of the strands you are collecting. A shed hair carries a small pale bulb, is usually a full length, and is a normal part of the growth cycle. A broken hair has no bulb and is shorter than the hair around it. The two sit in the same brush and mean entirely different things: breakage is handled here, while shedding — particularly if it is sudden, patchy or accompanied by a widening parting — belongs with a doctor first.
What are all the short hairs standing up around my parting?
They are either new growth or broken pieces, and the difference is visible if you look at the tip. New growth tapers to a fine point; a broken piece ends bluntly, at the same thickness as the rest of the shaft. A halo of blunt short hairs along the hairline and parting is a tension pattern, and it usually points at how the hair is tied rather than at anything applied to it.
Can a protein treatment cause breakage?
Yes, and it is one of the more common causes we see in people who are looking after their hair carefully. Protein adds rigidity; hair that already has enough becomes stiff and inflexible, and inflexible fibres snap instead of bending. The signs are a straw-like feel, dullness, and hair that will not stretch when wet. If that describes yours, the correction is to stop the protein and rebuild moisture over several weeks rather than to add a stronger product.
Does tying my hair up cause it?
Tying it does not; tying it tightly, in the same place, for hours every day does. The tension fatigues the fibres exactly where the band sits, which is why the short pieces appear in a line. Vary the height, use a fabric-covered tie or a coil rather than a thin elastic, keep it loose enough to move, and take it down at home. Sleeping in a tight tie is the version that does most harm.
Will a trim stop hair breaking?
It stops the breakage that starts at a failing end and works upward, which is a large share of it. It cannot stop breakage caused by tension, handling or a protein imbalance, because those act along the whole shaft rather than at the tip. In practice a trim is the first step and the routine change is the second — the trim removes what is already failing, and the routine decides whether it comes back.
How long before it looks normal again?
Longer than most people expect, because nothing repairs a broken fibre — the outline evens out as the short pieces grow, at roughly a centimetre a month. What changes quickly is the rate: correct the tension and the wet handling and new breakage largely stops within weeks. What takes months is the appearance. Anyone offering a faster answer is describing a coating that will wash out.
