Why hair becomes frizzy
Frizz is not a hair type and not a personal failing — it is a raised cuticle, and something raised it. This guide works through what frizz actually is, the four causes it usually comes down to, how it is diagnosed at the chair, and what each treatment can honestly do about it. The order matters: the cause first, the answer afterwards.
What frizzy hair really means
Every hair is a shaft wrapped in overlapping scales, and frizz is what you see when those scales stop lying flat.
A closed cuticle reflects light and holds moisture inside the shaft. A raised one does neither: light scatters instead of reflecting, so hair looks dull, and the shaft absorbs moisture from the air unevenly, so it swells in patches and lifts away from the strands around it. That lifting is frizz. It is a physical state of the surface, not a quality of the hair you were born with — which is why the same head can be smooth one month and frizzy the next.
This distinction matters more than any product recommendation. Curly and wavy hair frizzes more readily because the cuticle is naturally more raised along the curve of the shaft and natural oils travel down it less easily — but curl is not the cause, it is a predisposition. Straight hair frizzes too. Treating the curl is a common and expensive mistake made by people whose actual problem was porosity.
So the useful question is never 'how do I get rid of frizz'. It is 'what is holding my cuticle open' — because a treatment aimed at the wrong answer will fade in weeks and leave the cause exactly where it was.

How professionals diagnose frizz
A diagnosis takes a few minutes and decides everything that follows, which is why it happens before any treatment is named.
Porosity is checked by feel: a strand run between the fingers from end to root tells you how raised the cuticle is, and how fast a wet strand dries tells you how readily it releases what it absorbs. Elasticity is tested by stretching a wet strand — hair that stretches and returns is dry, hair that stretches and stays long or snaps is damaged, and those two words lead to opposite recommendations. The ends are read separately from the roots, because the ends are years older and have lived through everything.
Then the history, which usually explains more than the hair does: every chemical service in the past year, henna included; how often you wash and in what; what your water is like at home; how much heat, at what setting, how often. Frizz confined to the crown and hairline reads differently from frizz through the mid-lengths, and frizz that arrived after a specific appointment reads differently again.
The output is a cause, not a menu. Sometimes it is one cause; more often it is two stacked on each other — hard water plus daily heat, or colour plus a shampoo that is stripping it. Where the answer is a cut, a change of shampoo, or simply washing differently, that is what is said, and no treatment is offered at all. Recommending less is a valid outcome of a diagnosis, and a treatment sold before one is a guess with a price attached.

Cause one · Environment
Humidity, water and sun
The causes you did not choose, and the ones most often blamed on the hair itself. They are also the most predictable: the same head behaves differently in June than it does in December.

Humidity, which frizzes porous hair and leaves healthy hair alone
Water in the air is drawn into a shaft whose cuticle is open, and the shaft swells unevenly along its length. This is why frizz appears within minutes of stepping outside in the monsoon and why it is worse for some people than others in the same weather — the humidity is identical, the porosity is not. Humidity does not cause frizz; it reveals it.

Hard water, which is the quiet cause in this region
Calcium and magnesium deposit on the shaft with every wash, building a film that holds the cuticle open and dulls the colour. It develops slowly enough to feel like the hair changing on its own. Scale on your taps and soap that will not lather are the signs; a shower filter is the fix, and it costs a fraction of any treatment.

Sun, which lightens and lifts at the same time
Ultraviolet light degrades the protein in the outer layers, and hair that spends a summer uncovered comes back drier, lighter at the ends and rougher to the touch. Swimming compounds it: chlorine and salt both strip, and hair that goes into a pool dry absorbs far more of both than hair wet with plain water first.
The limit of this cause: none of it can be removed, only planned around. Where environment is the whole answer, a treatment bought to override it will fade on the same schedule the weather runs on.
Cause two · Heat
Heat damage, and the difference between dryness and damage
The most common cause we see, and the one guests are most surprised by — because the styling that hides frizz on the day is what produces it over months.

Temperature matters more than frequency
An iron at its maximum does damage a lower setting would not, in a single pass. Most tools run far hotter than any hair needs, and most of that heat is spent on nothing: the setting that smooths fine hair is well below the one that smooths coarse hair, and neither is the top of the dial.

Heat on wet hair is a different kind of damage
Water inside the shaft turns to steam and forces its way out, cracking the cuticle from underneath. An iron used on hair that is not fully dry, or a dryer held still and close, produces damage that no conditioning treatment reverses — it is structural, and it grows out rather than repairs.

It accumulates, which is why it seems to arrive suddenly
No single blow-dry causes frizz. Two hundred of them, without a protectant, take the cuticle apart gradually until the day the hair stops behaving — and by then the damage is spread through the whole length. This is why frizz so often appears to start for no reason.

A protectant helps, and it is not a licence
It raises the temperature the hair can take before damage begins; it does not make hair heatproof. Used as permission to run an iron daily at maximum, it delays the outcome rather than preventing it.
The limit of this cause: heat damage is not reversible. A treatment can coat and smooth damaged hair so it behaves for a while, but the shaft stays as it is until it is cut off.
Cause three · Chemical work
Colour, bleach and previous treatments
Every chemical service works by opening the cuticle. Done properly and spaced sensibly that is routine; stacked without recovery time it is the fastest route to porous, frizz-prone hair.

Colour and bleach raise the cuticle by design
There is no way in without opening the way in. Bleach goes furthest, dissolving pigment and taking protein with it, which is why bleached mid-lengths frizz where the untouched roots do not. Frizz that starts a few weeks after a colour appointment is usually this, and the fix is condition rather than another chemical.

Stacked services, with no gap between them
Colour one month, a smoothing treatment the next, highlights after that — each one is survivable and the sequence is not. Hair has no way to recover between them, and the frizz that follows gets blamed on the last service rather than on the schedule.

Henna and home colour, which change what is possible
Metallic salts in some henna and box colours react unpredictably with professional products, and the reaction is not always visible until it is too late. This is why the history is asked for in detail and why a strand test is done when it is complicated — not to be difficult, but because the alternative is finding out on your whole head.

A previous smoothing treatment growing out
Frizz appearing at the roots while the lengths stay smooth is usually regrowth, not new damage. That is a different problem with a different answer, and it is worth saying at the consultation because it changes what should be done and where.
The limit of this cause: hair that is breaking rather than dry — snapping when stretched wet — needs a cut and a repair plan first. Weight added to fragile hair makes it worse, whatever it is sold as.
Cause four · Daily habits
Washing, drying and everything between appointments
The cheapest causes to fix and the most often overlooked, because none of them feels like it could be responsible.

A shampoo that strips more than it cleans
Strong sulphates and high salt content lift the cuticle and pull moisture out of the shaft. Hair washed daily with a harsh shampoo is frizzy for a reason that has nothing to do with the hair — and the correction costs the price of a bottle, not a treatment.

Water that is too hot, and washing too often
Hot water opens the cuticle while the detergent is working, which is the worst possible combination. Cooler water and fewer washes are the two changes that show fastest on frizz-prone hair, usually within a fortnight.

Rubbing hair dry with a bath towel
Wet hair is at its most fragile, and a rough towel scrubbed over it roughens every scale at once. Squeezing with a cotton t-shirt or a microfibre towel is a thirty-second change that visibly reduces frizz for people who change nothing else.

Brushing wet, and brushing from the top
A brush dragged through wet hair from the roots down stretches and snaps it. Detangle from the ends upward, with a wide-tooth comb, on hair that is damp rather than soaking.

Friction overnight, and tight ties by day
Hundreds of nights on a cotton pillowcase roughen the cuticle at the crown, which is exactly where a lot of frizz sits. A loose plait and a silk or satin pillowcase cost little; thin elastics worn tight in the same place every day cost more than they look like they do.
The limit of this cause: habits explain frizz and can hold it at bay, but they cannot rebuild a shaft that heat or bleach has already damaged. Where both are present, the habits are fixed first so the treatment is not spent on a routine that will strip it.

What each treatment addresses, and when neither is right

When hair botox addresses the cause
Where the diagnosis is porosity and lost condition — hair that is dry, dull and rough from colour, heat, sun or hard water, with a shape you otherwise like — a repair-led treatment fills the shaft and lays the cuticle flat, and frizz calms as a consequence. It loosens curl rather than removing it, so it is the wrong answer for anyone whose brief is straight hair, and it adds weight, so it is assessed carefully on fine hair. It fades gradually over weeks to a few months, and how you wash decides where in that range you land.

When keratin addresses the cause
Where the hair is in reasonable condition and the complaint is specifically frizz that lifts in humidity, a sealing treatment coats the shaft so it dries smoother, faster and flatter, with the wave kept. It seals rather than repairs, which is the distinction that matters: on porous, over-processed ends it is frequently the wrong first step, and condition is built before smoothing is attempted. It too fades on a schedule set by your shampoo and your water.

When neither is appropriate
More often than the industry admits. Hair that is breaking rather than dry needs a cut and a course of conditioning, not a mask. Frizz caused entirely by hard water or a stripping shampoo is solved by a filter and a different bottle, and a treatment applied over it will fade at the same rate the cause is still working. Freshly bleached or chemically processed hair needs a gap. An inflamed or broken scalp belongs with a doctor. And where a smoothing treatment would be technically possible but would not survive your routine, saying so is the more useful answer than selling the sitting.
No treatment removes frizz permanently, and any that claims to is describing a different service. All of them manage a cause for a period, and the period depends on your hair and your aftercare.
How frizz gets misdiagnosed
Each of these is the reasonable thing to do with the information most people have. All of them treat the symptom while the cause carries on working.

Booking a smoothing treatment before anyone has looked at the hair.

Have the porosity, elasticity and history read first. The same frizz has different causes, and the treatment that suits one of them fails on another.

Ironing more often to keep the frizz down.
Instead
Lower the temperature and the frequency, and use a protectant. Heat used against frizz is usually what produced it.

Treating damaged hair as though it were dry.
Instead
Test elasticity on a wet strand. Hair that stretches and does not return needs protein and a cut, not more moisture.

Loading heavy oil onto the length to weigh frizz down.
Instead
Oil coats and flattens for a day; it does not close a cuticle. Useful as a pre-wash treatment, not as a cure applied to dry hair.

Assuming the curl is the problem and trying to remove it.
Instead
Treat the porosity. Curly hair that is well conditioned frizzes far less, and straightening a healthy curl pattern solves a problem you did not have.

Changing three products before checking the water.
Instead
Look at the taps first. Hard water undermines every product bought to fix what it is causing.

Space chemical work and let condition recover between services. Frizz that follows a busy month is usually the schedule, not the last thing done.

Is frizzy hair the same as damaged hair?
Not necessarily, and the difference decides the answer. Frizz is a raised cuticle, which can be caused by nothing worse than humidity on porous hair or a shampoo that is too strong. Damage is structural loss inside the shaft, and it also causes frizz — but it needs protein, a cut, and time rather than smoothing. The practical test is elasticity: a wet strand that stretches and springs back is dry; one that stretches and stays long, or snaps, is damaged.
Why does my hair frizz the moment I step outside?
Because the cuticle is open and the shaft is absorbing water from the air unevenly, swelling in patches. The weather is the trigger, not the cause — someone with a closed cuticle walks through the same monsoon and stays smooth. That is why the useful response is to work out what is holding your cuticle open, rather than to look for a product that outperforms the weather.
Will oiling fix frizz?
It will flatten it temporarily. Oil coats the outside of the shaft and weighs the lifted scales down, which is why hair looks smoother for a day, but it does not close a cuticle or replace what the shaft has lost. Used warm before a wash it genuinely helps dry hair; applied to dry hair as a daily fix it usually leaves the roots heavy while the underlying cause carries on. It is also the wrong answer entirely on hair that is damaged rather than dry.
Can a haircut make frizz better?
Often, and it is the most underrated answer we give. Split and worn ends frizz more than the rest of the hair and cannot be repaired, so removing them removes the frizziest part of the length outright. Weight and shape matter too — over-thinned or heavily layered hair frizzes more readily because there is less weight holding the length down. Where the ends are the problem, a cut costs less than any treatment and lasts longer.
My hair is frizzy only at the crown and hairline. Why there?
That pattern usually points at friction and breakage rather than porosity: pillow friction at the crown, the same tight tie in the same place every day, and short new growth that has not yet caught up with the length. Sun exposure hits the same area hardest. Frizz confined to one zone is diagnostically useful — it tends to rule out the causes that would show through the whole head, and it is worth mentioning rather than smoothing over.
Can frizz be removed permanently?
No, and anything sold as permanent is describing a different service — chemical straightening, which changes the hair's structure and carries its own commitments. Frizz is managed: the cause is addressed, the routine is adjusted, and where a treatment is appropriate it holds for a period that depends on your hair and your aftercare. Hair also keeps growing, and new growth arrives with whatever tendencies it always had.
